Moonbase 3 was an under-valued program from the early 70s. The stories were based on what might very well have occurred in the near future. Moonbase 3 is one of five bases on the surface of the moon this one being run and staffed by Europeans. The first episode sees a British commander arriving and taking over from the French second in command who had been running the base. The other bases on the moon are governed by the US, Russia, China and Brazil respectively. The program has a slow measured pace with realistic situations addressed. The base psychiatrist played by Fiona Gaunt interestingly is involved in questionable liaisons with crew members in two of the episodes. She was pleasant to look at but her skills left something to be desired as she misread several of the astronauts under her purview. Michael Gough appeared in episode six and it was a riveting end of the world story and the effect it had on the moonbase as they awaited their food and supplies running out. The characters were far from perfect and leant authenticity to the stories coming across as real people reacting to extraordinary situations. 9 out of 10.
